The Bike

This is where I can rant on about my fantastic bike, a Santa Cruz Superlight, with SID 100 forks, Crossmaxes and mostly XT gruppo with Hope Mini brakes.

Most recent spec incarnation is listed below.

Oh, and the mags have reviewed various versions of the Superlight, read what they say here

April 2002

Frame Santa Cruz Superlight, size Medium Shorter than my old K2, a bit lighter and an all round great bike
Fork Rock Shox SID 100 4" F&R - about perfect for my type of riding.  The SID 100 may not be the stiffest, but it's light and eats the bumps
Headset Orbit XLII Its a headset
Stem Race Face SyStem Cool looking and much stiffer than my old Control Tech thing
Handlebars Club Roost Go Fast Comp II Riser Risers are cool - Just go FAST!
Grips Titec Nice 'n' comfy
Seatpin Club Roost Aluminium What I could get - nice finishing for £40
Sadddle Flite Kelvar Comfy, lite and tuff (good spelling huh?)
Gear shifters Shimano XT 9spd Workhorse standard
Front Mech LX ditto, couldn't get XT in a hurry so had to settle for LX
Rear Mech XT 9spd standard stuff
Chainset XT New Style 9 speed XT with splined BB, so much better design, stiffer than the old style ones too, way light!!
Pedals Shimano M545 Platform types with alloy cages Nice, but I'm not sure about the bearings quality...
Chain Sachs PC91 Way cool with slotted links, but I'm not sure of its long term durability with the full sus frame, snapped a couple now, but I guess they were past their sell by date, so I keep buying them....
Bottom Bracket XT Standard stuff, splined now for 9 speed
Brakes Hope Minis I wanted some new wheels, so why go for rim brakes when you can upgrade to discs.  Had to re-mortgage the house, but it was worth it!!  Superior stopping performance and no comparison with V's.
Wheels Mavic Crossmax UST Discs These have to be the coolest wheels money can buy.  I used to have a pair of the old crossmaxes, and when it was time to upgrade, there is no option - once you've ridden crossmaxes there is no alternative!
Tyres - Front Currently I'm running Panaracer Fire XC's 2.1 in the summer and Tioga Mud's in the winter.   Seems like a good combination as the Tiogas are brilliant in mud but have crap rolling ability and the Panaracers roll well but hate the wet.  Can get fun when you have the wrong tyre on though
Tyres -Rear Paired with front See above
Cassette XT Standard stuff
